Chapter Thirteen:

Three days after my inaugural flight, we had guests – Darrell Hawking and Steve Davis. I had heard so much about them, and I absorbed their files in advance before we met. Darrell was a giant. I thought I was tall at two hundred two centimeters, but he was a good ten centimeters taller. Steve was just about the same height as Tor, a hundred ninety five centimeters. The files were complete as far as their technical achievements and contributions, but like everyone else, woefully short on personal information.

The reason that Dar and Steve were way out on the galactic rim is that Dar had theorized that there was an interface point with an alternate universe there, if he could just find a passage. If he could affect a crossing into the alternate universe, that could be a way out for all of us, just pack up and leave, since we were so badly outnumbered. Maybe we would have a better chance at peace there than here, at least that was the hope. Given the tenuous position of the Freedom Alliance, all possibilities had to be investigated. The only thing of a personal nature in Dar’s file is that he collected recipes and liked to cook. That at least gave us something in common.
